The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has come up with a plan to set up the first ever wax museum in the city.
The museum, being planned on the lines of London's Madame Tussauds wax museum, will be set up at Rajarhat New Town and a 5000 sq ft area on the top floor of the Finance Centre building, opposite the Eco Park in New Town, has already been identified.
"We have identified a floor inside the Finance Centre building that will be centrally air-conditioned. Artists' help will also be taken while setting up the museum. There will be both historical and current personalities. Initially, 10 to 12 statues are being planned for the museum. To start off with, a dozen of such statues are planned to be put up in the museum," said HIDCO chairman-cum-managing director Debashis Sen.
Officials said that some statues will be brought in and some are to be commissioned. Sushanta Roy, a veteran wax sculptor who recently shot to fame with his replica of Sachin Tendulkar, will be part of this project.
Once the plan materializes, it will be the city's first ever wax museum and a major tourist attraction in the city. The authorities are inviting sculptors and artists to give them life size exquisite wax statues of eminent personalities. From Rabindranath Tagore to Sourav Ganguly, eminent Bengalis will find a place in this museum.
Last year, a sculpture workshop was organized in the township where several reputed sculptors participated and came up with beautiful statues and busts, some of which have been put up at key areas of New Town, such as the one installed in the second rotary of the township.
The City of Joy will soon boast of a new tourist destination for years to come, and will fulfil yet another of its London Dreams.
