After the Eco Tourism Park, another bheri will get a makeover and turn into an aqua hub.
Encouraged by the success of the Eco Tourism Park (Prakriti Tirtha) in Rajarhat New Town which was fashioned out of a 480-acre waterbody, the state fisheries department has decided to do something similar with the 30-acre Captain’s Bheri off EM Bypass. The project includes an aquarium, a tortoise room with captive breeding facilities and a habitat for several varieties of ducks. The authorities also have plans to set up a joggers’ park, a flower garden surrounding the waterbody, a food park and a parking lot for around 100 cars.
The State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC) has already started working on the project worth around Rs 1 crore. “The plan is to beautify and develop the bheri as an aqua hub. Plantation has already started in the area,” said SFDC managing director Soumyajit Das. The project will be completed this year.
Though the total bheri area measures around 30 acres, the water body in the middle covers about 16 acres. Seikh Abul Kasham, secretary of the Captain’s Bheri Fishermen’s Cooperative Society Ltd, said: “The bheri is registered with us and we will maintain the bheri after the SFDC’s beautification project.”
At present, Captain’s Bheri is a popular winter picnic spot. “There is boating facility for picnickers with four person pedal boats. These will be a remodeled, according to plans,” Kasham said.
There are some structures that were built a long time back, before the area — which falls under the East Kolkata Wetlands — was declared a Ramsar site. There will be no new construction activity now. “It will only be developed as an aqua hub keeping the natural habitat and ecology intact,” said an official.
