Sculpture garden to come up at Rajarhat

February 27, 2014

Kolkata is soon going to have its own sculpture garden at the Eco Park in Rajarhat New Town. Officials of the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) held a meeting on Saturday where the project was discussed and finalized.

HIDCO chairman-cum-managing director Debashis Sen said that the sculpture garden has been proposed near the butterfly park at Eco Park and an architect has been named. "Tenders will be floated for the project once the architectural sketch is completed," Sen said.

Unique plan for the city

Painter Suvaprasanna, who is also the chairman of the West Bengal Heritage Commission, will be working on the design of the proposed sculpture garden. "The plan to have a sculpture garden has been mooted. It is a unique plan for the city," he said.

Sculpture garden is a unique concept that has come up in several other countries. It is like an outdoor museum where different types of multi-dimensional sculptures and artifacts depicting artwork and culture of a particular country are displayed. According to HIDCO, sculptures depicting the art and culture of various ages of the country will be displayed at the proposed garden in city.

HIDCO authorities have been working on such plans to develop the township. Last year, a sculpture workshop was organized in the township, where several reputed sculptors participated and came up with beautiful statues and busts. A few of the works have been put up at key intersections of the township.

Several attractions at Eco Park

Adding to the sculpture garden plan, HIDCO authorities are also working on setting up the city's first wax museum in New Town, modelled on Madame Tussauds wax museum in London. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee recently laid the foundation stone for the wax museum that will be set up on the sixth floor of Finance centre opposite Eco Park.

HIDCO authorities will soon be inviting reputed sculptors and artists to come up with life-size statues of famous personalities and luminaries.

So many new developments and activities going on in West Bengal it's hard to believe. The state literally was sleeping under the 34 years of Left Front - very obvious now.
