New home for migratory birds in Kolkata

April 9, 2014

Bird lovers and nature enthusiasts in Kolkata can rejoice. Migratory birds will soon find a new abode at the Eco-Tourism Park (Prakriti Tirtha) in New Town. The news brought a cheer to the wild life photographers in Kolkata who are passionate about clicking birds.

With proper plans and initiatives, the sprawling 480 acre area of Eco Park, the nature hub in the city will attract birds. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) with the help of the state forest department has started working on it.

"Preliminary work has already started to set up a bird sanctuary. We are also working on plans to set up a bird interpretation centre at the Eco Park. We plan to organise games and bird-watching contests to bring in enthusiasts," said NKDA and Hidco chairman Debashis Sen.

Documentation work is going on to record the number and species of birds that are already visiting the place.  "We will set up 'pakhiralayas' and have already inspected some probable spots for it," Sen said.

The huge water body inside the park area already attracts many birds. To help the visitors with a great viewing experience, a bird observatory has been set up with a board mentioning the various species of birds visiting the spot. This has been done to help viewers recognize the birds. Several gardens have been set up inside the Eco Park with the help of the forest department.

"A lot can be done and the place has tremendous potential. Bird-watching could also be a hobby as so many people visit it," said environment activist and member of the East Kolkata Wetland Management Authority, Banani Kakkar, who recently visited Eco Park.

"There are several such spots in and around the city where such migratory bird habitats could be set up. Such initiatives are always welcome," said Shyamal Ghosh, secretary of Peoples's Green Society, a city-based NGO dealing with environmental issues.
