Companies in West Bengal have notched up another impressive feat. Forty-one companies registered in West Bengal (specifically, Kolkata), many of which operate primarily from the state, feature in Dun & Bradstreet India's 'Top 500 Companies' report. The list includes both private sector companies as well as public sector enterprises (PSEs) that are listed on stock exchanges.
This follows closely on the heels of the ‘Brand Trust Report, India Study, 2014’, where 35 brands from the West Bengal, cutting across sectors, featured among the country's top 1,000 brands. That list was compiled by a leading Indian business consultant, Trust Research Advisory (TRA) with parameters set by Indian Statistical Institute, Mumbai.
The latest report by the American company Dun & Bradstreet, the world’s leading provider of commercial data, analytics, and insight on businesses or content, is a step better, as it lists the top 500.
According to Dun & Bradstreet, the report profiles India's most well-respected and high-performing companies on the basis of various financial parameters.
The company’s statement added: ‘The ranking is done on the basis of various parameters such as total income, net profit and net worth. It includes both private sector companies as well as public sector enterprises (PSEs) that are listed on stock exchanges.’
A few specifics
The shortlisting of companies was based on total income and average market capitalisation on BSE and NSE for financial year 2012-13.
288 of the companies featuring in India's top 500 contribute 20% to the total GDP.
Also, these 288 companies account for more than 10% of India's total employment in the organised sector.
India’s top 500 companies are responsible for about 30% of the country’s total exports, helping in building Brand India in the global arena.
The number of companies from the private sector far outweighed that from the public sector, 430 as against 70.
As many as 102 companies based in northern India have found a place in the report, including the likes of Apollo Tyres, Eicher Motors, Cairn India and Nestle India.
