Floating markets are popular in Europe, the US, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, among other places. In India, they can be seen in Dal Lake, but nowhere else. Now floating markets are going to come up in Kolkata too, on a lake in Patuli to be exact. There are two big lakes near the Patuli vegetable market. The floating markets would come up on those lakes.
Already a detailed project report is being made by KMDA, which would ask the Centre for aid under the National Livelihood Mission. As per a preliminary plan, the following would be the main features of the floating market:
- 130 boats
- Vegetable and fruit stalls on boats
- Market would be open ta night
- Manicured lawns and gardens beside the lake
- Grocery shops would also be opened
- Sulabh toilets
Shop owners and hawkers are very excited about the potential of the project. So is KMDA. It would be the first floating market in India, beside the one on Dal Lake in Srinagar, and it would be tourist attraction too, just like other countries have made them to be.
