A Floating book-fair, a unique concept not only in the State but the country as well was inaugurated last day by the Governor of West Bengal in presence of three Cabinet Ministers of the State government, Arup Roy, Rajib Banerjee and Haider Ali Safi. The ‘mayurpankh boat’ was inaugurated in Howrah, Ramkrishnapur ghat and saw a flurry of book enthusiasts in its presence.
Over the next six days this boat will travel along the seven ghats of Hooghly and station each day at a separate ghat for the readers to hop onto. The book fair is being organised by West Bengal Public Library Network and will host around ten thousand books. The network has in addition arranged for a cultural programme to be hosted on the deck of the launch.
Schedule for the 'floating boi mela':
20 January: Inauguration
21 January: Vessel will travel to the ghat next to Howrah Station and in the evening it will halt at Bandha Ghat
22 January: Babughat
23 January: Baghbazar Ghat
24 January: Belur Ghat
25 January: Dakhineshwar Ghat
The fair will take place from 12 noon to evening 6 p.m. without any entry fee. Book lovers can go through various books and pick their favourites here.
