The huge area that the International Kolkata Book Fair is held in calls for navigation aids; and not just for locating the book stalls, but other things like washrooms, ATMs, food stalls, etc. too. Maps have been printed for many years now, but now another important aid has been added – a mobile phone app.
In this age of smartphones, a good interactive app is what many would crave for, and that has been done this time. The app, titled ‘Kolkata Book Fair 2015,’ has been developed by the private power utility, CESC.
The 39th Book Fair, organised by Publishers & Booksellers Guild, is being held from January 28 to February 8 at Milan Mela Ground, near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The app is divided into six sections, which are represented by six clickable squares, and which can also be accessed from a dropdown menu. The six sections are Get Route Direction, Locate Important Stalls, Utilities, Locate Your Stall, Events and Exhibitors.
The names are self-explainable. Particularly important would be the Get Route Direction section, where you can select the stall you are at and the one you want to go to from dropdown menus, and get the direction on the map of the Book Fair layout. Locate Your Stall marks for you on the map the location of a particular stall. The Events section gives you a list of the events like talks with various literary personalities and cultural programmes being held daily at the SBI Auditorium and also the itinerary of the Kolkata Literature Festival to be held at the fairground.
Last but not the least, there is the Utilities section of the app, which gives you the directions to washrooms, food stalls, medical facilities, drinking water facilities and a few other things.
