Kolkata – India’s fastest-growing city

Kolkata – India’s fastest-growing city

June 30, 2015

In recent years, Kolkata has been at the forefront of progress and growth in India. From having the best public transportation system to the best quality of life to being the safest city for women in India, accolades have come in thick and fast. The latest feather in the cap is a report covering 125 of the world’s top cities, published by the highly reputable London-based global management consulting group, AT Kearney, according to which the capital city of West Bengal is the fastest-growing city in India.

The AT Kearney Global Cities Index (GCI) ranks 125 cities according to 27 metrics across five dimensions, including business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience, and political engagement. As per the index for 2015, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru are the top three cities in India. This is the fifth edition of the GCI. It was launched in 2008, and then has come out in 2010, 2012, 2014, and now in 2015.

According to the authors of the report, Kolkata and the other two cities in India are making a rapid improvement on the dimension of human capital, which would enable them to become top hubs of business activity in Asia in the near future.

The top three fastest-improving cities are also in India – Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru – followed by Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. These three have had the fastest-growing scores since 2008, when the index was launched.

The report by AT Kearney, accompanying the index, says the race for global city status is accelerating. Since 2008, the average GCI scores have increased by 10%. Hence, cities that can only maintain their scores are likely to decline in the rankings in the future. Although the top five cities in the GCI have largely retained their position since the index was launched in 2008, the overall index scores are becoming more tightly grouped.

As for Kolkata, GCI 2015 is another affirmation of the fact that the city is slowly but surely coming to the forefront of cities to watch out for in the near future; and not just in India, but in Asia too and even in the world.

Various rankings by national and international agencies over the last few years have put Kolkata among the top cities in India, based on various parameters. Below is a list of (with the links to) the articles wherein we have covered these rankings, that prove that Kolkata is indeed amongst the best places to live in.
